In a landmark move to boost agricultural productivity and improve rural infrastructure, the Abia State Government formally flagged off the construction of the 19.1-kilometer Itungwa-Mgboko-Amaise-Amairi-Omoba-Abiaba-Nkwo-Elechi road under the World Bank-supported Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project (RAAMP).
The Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, alongside the National Coordinator of RAAMP, Engr. Aminu Bodinga Mohammed, traditional rulers, and key stakeholders, presided over the groundbreaking ceremony, which marks a significant step in expanding rural access and enhancing agricultural value chains in the state.

Speaking at the event, Governor Otti described the project as a pathway to rural prosperity, connecting farmers, traders, and entrepreneurs to greater opportunities. “This project represents much more than the construction of a road; it is a catalyst for progress, connecting our rural communities to greater opportunities and creating a pathway to prosperity,” said Governor Otti. He highlighted the administration’s commitment to unlocking Abia’s economic potential by investing in infrastructure that supports agricultural value chains, reduces production costs, and increases access to markets.
According to him, over the past 16 months, the Abia State Government has initiated and flagged off numerous road projects as part of its broader agenda to improve infrastructure and service delivery. while emphasizing that the RAAMP project aligns perfectly with his administration’s vision of building sustainable social and economic infrastructure that benefits all parts of the state.
“This particular road had remained on the drawing board for years without any progress,” the Governor remarked. “Today, we are proud to move it from mere planning to execution, and the significance of this event goes beyond roads—it underscores our dedication to ensuring even development across all parts of Abia.”
Governor Otti expressed his deep appreciation to the World Bank, the French Development Agency (AFD), and other development partners for their unwavering support of the RAAMP initiative in Abia State
Governor Otti also announced that the state government has paid its N600 million counterpart funding for the project, with an additional N2.6 billion released to facilitate effective project execution.
The 19.1 km road project is only the beginning. Governor Otti revealed plans to award contracts for additional roads extending up to 256 kilometers across various parts of the state by the end of the year, subject to partner ratification. Furthermore, RAAMP will not only improve roads but also upgrade six agro-logistics hubs in key local government areas, enhancing market access for rural farmers and reducing post-harvest losses.

‘The flag-off ceremony marks a new milestone in Abia’s journey toward sustainable development and improved livelihoods for rural populations’’ he stated.
Earlier the National Coordinator, RAAMP Engr. Aminu Bodinga Mohammed, represented by the National Development Communication Officer, Mrs Vivian Amadi, while delivering his goodwill message underscored the significance of the project, stating, “This project is a pathway to progress, a bridge to prosperity, and a channel through which rural communities can access the opportunities they need to thrive. By reducing travel time, facilitating the smooth transportation of goods, and lowering production costs, this project will contribute to greater economic prosperity and food security, not just in Abia State but across Nigeria.”
Engr. Mohammed further reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to addressing rural infrastructure challenges, highlighting that RAAMP is designed to rehabilitate rural roads, improve rural transport infrastructure, and provide enhanced access to markets. He commended the Abia State Government, led by Dr. Otti, and all stakeholders for their dedication to making this groundbreaking possible.
The National Coordinator lauded the collaborative efforts between the Federal Government and international partners, stressing that the 19.1 km pilot road is a bold step forward in addressing rural infrastructure challenges in Nigeria.
He stressed that RAAMP is designed to create long-lasting benefits by improving access to markets, increasing productivity, and reducing rural-urban migration. “Together, let us build a legacy that will stand the test of time and continue to benefit generations to come,” he said.
Engr. Mohammed also thanked the local communities along the project route for their patience and cooperation, urging all parties to maintain the highest standards of transparency and accountability throughout the construction process.
